Crome & White

May 23, 2009 by sylvie

This week I am visiting my family in Germany. Out here in the country side bloggable events are few and far between (unless you'd really care for family pics...) but today one came roaring by - a friend of my family stopped by with his classic BMW. Apparently, the bike has quite an interesting history. It was part of a small series kitted out for the royal Swedish motorcade in '68. When it got decomissioned, it became property of the Swedish queen herself. The friend bought the bike a few years ago and completely restored it to it's original state.

Farm Ass Germ Salami

May 20, 2009 by sylvie

This one belongs to B. who pointed out the appearance of Farm Ass Germ Salami on our grocery bills months ago. Any guess to what this might be? Hint: it's quite tasty and I had some for lunch. Read more

Election Time

If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound? If a blogger posts a story and no one comments, is it relevant?
I have been posting to this site for a good two months now and so far it has been fun. From the logs I can see that a number of people have checked the site out at least once. I can also see that a few of you are coming back more regularly, presumably to look for the newest posts. In general, most visitors stay for a few minutes which probably means that they actually read one or more of the articles. So far so good. Read more

Guide Dog Challenge

May 15, 2009 by sylvie

This fund raiser mail went out this evening to about everyone and their dog (no pun intended). If you didn't get it, it probably means I don't have your most recent email address in my address book... Read more

Fog City

May 14, 2009 by sylvie

Last month I published a series of Golden Gate pictures while complaining that I missed out on the most typical bridge in fog shot. Well, I shouldn't have complained so quickly. Just ten days later, our friend took us sailing in the bay. We left from the Berkeley marina, headed for Angel Island for lunch, then sailed around the island and back  towards Berkeley along the SF waterfront.

Crotch Rocket

May 13, 2009 by sylvie

Am I the only one who thinks that a yellow crotch rocket should not come with a learner's sticker? I have been seeing this bike in my street for several months now but I just can't get used to the sight.

[In all fairness I should point out that the Sachs XTC Racing has only 125 cc and is advertised as an ideal beginner bike. But still...]

Alton 10

After I got more serious about my jogging routine recently I occasionally got asked about the famous "runner's high". Well, science still seems to be divided on whether the runner's high (supposedly an endorphin rush caused by endurance exercise) actually exists. More importantly, even if it does exist I rather doubt that a moderately ambitious hobby athlete like myself will ever experience it. However, this weekend I came across what can best be described as "runner's low." Read more

In The Dog House

May 6, 2009 by sylvie

If you are calling for B. this week don't bother - he is in the dog house and will be there for a while! It all began when he mentioned a few days ago that a friend of ours, like B. a lecturer at the local university, would give a talk today about his research. I had recently gotten into a few mock battles with this friend about the value of basic reach to mankind in general and the science community in particular, unfortunately without knowing much about his topic of research other than that it seemed rather theoretical. This talk therefore represented a good opportunity to catch up and learn more about his work, if for no other reason than to be better armed for the next pub discussion.  Read more

Blogging & Retirement

May 5, 2009 by sylvie

I haven't posted an update for quite a while, mostly because the last few days were more or less void of bloggable events. These days I seem to pass my time with running (with my training schedule getting harder, a large part of the daily run now consists of the pre-run procrastination ^d^d^d preparation...), and reconfiguring my macbook after a supposedly harmless OS reinstall messed up a number of my favorite apps big time. (Get a Mac, they said. It's so easy, they said...) Not exactly Pulitzer Prize material, all of this. Read more
