R&R's Big Day

June 30, 2009 by sylvie

Richard and RachelEarlier this month we attended the wedding of our friends Richard and Rachel. We watched them exchange their vows at Wem, the only English Registrar's Office in a three letter town (or so we were told), then partied for the rest of the day at the village hall in Atcham, Shropshire.

I'll spare you the toast-by-toast in-deapth account of the celebrations as I am sure those of you who know the two R's have heard it all by now from multiple sources. However, I should at least emphasize once again that fun was had by all (as Richard would have put it), none the least due to an appetizer involving stilton and raspberries, a lively ceilidh band, and a rather amazing cake stand plus cake. Bernd and Sylvie Go Online

June 29, 2009 by sylvie

I know, I know, I have been pretty quiet for the last week or two. The reason is simple: first I spent a few days in Germany with my family where bloggable events (particularly those of at least some public interest) are rare and the schedule is packed. And since I came back I have been working on a super secret project.

Luckily it's all finished now. I am happy to present my brand new "Books" tab! Enjoy!

Check Engine Light

June 18, 2009 by sylvie

Nobody should be too surprised if I confess that I fly too much. Not nearly as much as some business travelers but probably quite a bit more than the average tourist. Most of you will assume that I am a pretty well practiced traveler. At least that's what I myself thought until this week. Then I managed to show up at the airport for my flight to Germany - without my passport.

Luckily, I still had half an hour before the flight would close and so I grabbed a cab and rushed home to get the documents. In the end I even had five minutes to spare after I checked my bag in. Phew. Read more

Flying Cow

June 15, 2009 by sylvie

I have been working on Bernd for a while now to try out a more scenic route to work. Rather than cycling along a busy thoroughfare and through a local high street I think he should head straight for the Commons (a large park in the middle of the city) and come out right behind his office building. I believe this route is only marginally longer and miles prettier, not to mention safer as well.
Well, yesterday he finally gave in and tried the park route. Unfortunately, he never got a chance to appreciate it. Half way though the park a flying duck pooped on his favorite shirt!... Yikes!... I suspect he'll forever stick to the roads now. Read more

Bike Fairy

June 13, 2009 by sylvie

The bike fairy came by today to take care of Bernd's brakes. Her visit was long overdue and Bernd had almost given up leaving milk and cookies out to attract her, but there she was.

Like all fairies she was a bit shy so this is the only picture we managed to snap. But if you see her in town today you'll recognize her by her greasy fingernails. Read more

A Thanks To Our Sponsors

June 2, 2009 by sylvie

If you are following this blog you probably know that I ran my first marathon last Sunday. In fact, you might even have donated to the associated fundraising campaign. Well, I am happy to say that I finished the race in good form. It took me around 4 hours and 17 minutes - slightly slower than what I had hoped for but still pretty good considering that I had picked up an annoying knee injury during the last phase of the training and wasn't even sure I could finish the course under these circumstances. And not only did I complete the race honorably; as you can see from Bernd's finish line picture, I really had fun doing it!

I might post a more detailed race report later (not sure it would make a very interesting read for all but the hardiest athletes :-) but for now I just want to shout out a big "Thank you" to all my sponsors. By the time all the pledged donations including my own match have come in I will have raised over 700 GBP for the Guide Dogs for the Blind! (If the picture looks like I am strangling the poor guide dog it's because I was trying to keep her from licking the salt off my arms...) Read more
